I still don't get the criticism of the Wasow research. Saying ~it's bad to study the mediated effects of violent riots on voters' political attitudes, because actually political and material deprivation caused the riots~ is really counterproductive if you think about it (1/2)pic.twitter.com/V0IMnQrlKR
That's why i said "basically" in the original tweet — I thought that section of the Robinson piece was quite weak
It wasn’t just “weak.” You could only write that paragraph if you hadn’t read the research article or have no idea how to think about all this. It wasn’t bad research and it didn’t claim or do any of the alleged things claimed here. I’m not gonna bother to chase down the rest.
Honestly I’m not going to chase down the rest (a lot of bad faith arguing going on on many sides) but that paragraph is indefensibly wrong—and empty. It’s made up stuff.
No argument here! But that graf, which I did not endorse, is really incidental to the core argument of the piece, which I largely do
It shouldn’t be this easy to trash a scholar’s careful, detailed and nuanced research that took years of work! Especially if doesn’t commit any of the alleged sins. I’m for trashing peer-reviewed research when necessary. But not contortion beyond recognition to fit an argument.
The most charitable interpretation is that Robinson did not read the paper about which he’s making wildly inaccurate claims. Not okay.
