I've been avoiding tweeting about coronavirus because a) I don't want to add to the noise and b) I'm too busy to spend much time on Twitter. But a thread from @Atul_Gawande + data from @TeacherTapp persuades me to break a rule. (Forgive the clickbait, but) read on to save a life.

Data from
@TeacherTapp suggests only 3% of schools are mandating wearing masks: https://teachertapp.co.uk/emerging-from-lockdown-new-world-looks/ … This is a mistake.1 reply 8 retweets 11 likesShow this thread -

Compelling example: Two hairdressers with coronavirus saw 140 customers. Hairdressers and customers wore masks. 14 days later, NONE of the customers had tested positive. https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/11/us/missouri-hairstylists-coronavirus-clients-trnd/index.html … (For wider evidence, read

Atul GawandeVerified account @Atul_GawandeImportant results: Remember the 2 MO hairstylists who saw 140 clients over 8 days while infected with COVID but everyone had worn masks? Contact tracers found ZERO secondary infections. More evidence that masks work. https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/11/us/missouri-hairstylists-coronavirus-clients-trnd/index.html …Show this thread1 reply 5 retweets 12 likesShow this thread -

Even if you're unconvinced, it's hard to imagine disadvantages of wearing masks as a precaution (lipreading the sole exception). Note 1: Cloth masks, not medical ones. Note 2: Do masks encourage riskier behaviour? No, they increase distancing.https://twitter.com/Babak_Javid_Lab/status/1269312406120996864 …

Babak Javid @javid_labThis is a cool study! Masks/goggles increase social/physical distancing by OTHERS to wearer: as measured by remote sensing technology! Doesn't tackle the straw man 'masks make wearers more reckless', but suggests even ineffective masks may protect by increasing physical distances https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1269308838110302209 …2 replies 0 retweets 8 likesShow this thread -
If you're wondering why WHO guidelines said otherwise, read
@slatestarcodex's post (from MARCH) explaining the limits of those guidelines (TL/DR: absence of evidence of effect; not evidence of absence). https://slatestarcodex.com/2020/03/23/face-masks-much-more-than-you-wanted-to-know/ …1 reply 0 retweets 5 likesShow this thread -

I owe my conviction to two people who've advocated masks diligently, consistently and compellingly since this began:
@nntaleb, doing the quantitative work and advocating for the precautionary principle https://twitter.com/nntaleb/status/1269687435132354564 … and@zeynep marshalling and standing by the evidence.Harry Fletcher-Wood added,
