Thank you. The *way* we got this one wrong is important, too. Involves assessing "evidence"; judging tail-risk; applying the precautionary principle; overcoming institutional arrogance and inertia; being better at public goods... And yes, why did we ignore the experts in Asia?https://twitter.com/chrislhayes/status/1271499106641461257 …

We need adaptive PPE, the disability community *must* not be left behind, not everyone can wear a mask. This includes folks for whom it prevents a communication barrier, but there are other disabled folks who can’t use masks

Not surprising. People in health care industry and other professions (sanding, cleaning asbestos, etc.) have been wearing masks for extended periods of time regularly for decades with no health issues reported as far as I can tell.

The Minister for Health here in Ireland mentioned that some people may have conditions that make it difficult to wear face coverings.

We were arrogantly assuming what happens in those far away countries cannot happen here. In both the EU, and America. And then we did not follow the east asians, who had comparable epidemics before, and assumed we were so superior that we could figure it out by ourselves.Slowly.

To be sure, Chinese authorities did explicitly ban the use of N95 masks in sports classes, IIRC after a few incidents of students collapsing wearing them during heavy exertion. Ordinary masks are of course still allowed, and in some situations required in schools.
-
Most workplaces require a fit test before N95s are issued to an employee. It assesses if the employee is able to wear that type of mask.

part of my job is fitting people with masks and teaching how to use CAPR (continuous air powered respirators). Many people cannot wear masks due to facial irregularities, respiratory and cardiac issues.
-
People with claustrophobia and anxiety often can't wear masks. CAPRs offer a higher level of protection for people but are cost-prohibitive.
