Journalists please ask WHO to clarify the "asymptomatic" claim in writing—not just repeat their unclear statement, but actually clarify—and to provide evidence. It's a very important question and the confusion has already done great damage.https://twitter.com/gmleunghku/status/1270127930136424449 …

"A pandemic is a communications emergency as much as a medical crisis." When we are teaching the next generation, please keep that line in mind. If we bungle the communication, we cannot win against the epidemic. We need full clarity, whatever it is.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1254562004246855681 …

This is my rough transcript of that portion of presser. I honestly cannot interpret this with any clarity—especially given the new mask guidance. I don't think anyone else can interpret this for them. We're asking people to upend their lives. Things need to be very, very clear.pic.twitter.com/9ug8JdwLxt

If they have some hidden data, great (doubt it), but in the absence of that when they’re talking about transmission I’m not sure why this emphasized distinction between a/presymptomatic would even matter.

Believe me, I've been trying to understand for awhile now. It's either spectacular hidden data (WTF but okay; let's see it) or an absolutely unnecessary statement (since no practical import). But watch the presser. That's not what they mean as far as I can humanly tell.

This was definitely my read. The WHO would almost certainly use precise terminology. The press? Not so much. And the headline directly contradicted what the WHO said.
-
No, they haven't been using precise language, unfortunately. That's the problem.
