Of course, the pandemic hasn't gone away just because there are deep injustices worth protesting. And police kettling, crowded jails/detention, tear gas and lack of respirators greatly worsen risk. That said, there are ways to protest safer. Oh, no. That's the third case that I know of. Is there a centralized list? There should be nationwide tracking of injuries from tear gas, the canisters, rubber bullets and the baton use. Given what we are seeing, it may be a substantial toll.https://twitter.com/CNSDallas/status/1268321956744617985 …

Brandon Saenz, 26, was shot in the left eye by @DallasPD Saturday night by a rubber bullet. He lost the eye, several teeth & had facial fractures that required several surgeries. His presser just wrapped, is demanding action from @ChiefHallDPD. Story forthcoming @CourthouseNews pic.twitter.com/7hOQpRum5F

Someone has a count of five people who have lost an eye to rubber bullets or canisters last week. This is sadly a too common occurrence—police forces around the world shooting directly at protesters kill and maim many with so-called "nonlethal" weapons. https://twitter.com/kate10010/status/1269116926283956225 …

Oh, no, sorry. Eight. This happened in Hong Kong last year, in Egypt during the 2011 uprising; in Gezi Park protests in 2013 and elsewhere. There have been many protests around the world with people wearing eye-patches to protest this. Sadly, now the US. https://twitter.com/kate10010/status/1269288580926619648 …

Seattle banned tear-gas. Okay but not enough. Decades of research shows belligerent policing is pivotal to escalating violence. Perhaps the most important intervention would be to have police stand down from protest policing. Take off the gear. Stand back. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/06/i-cant-breathe-using-tear-gas-during-pandemic/612673/ …pic.twitter.com/tYK5Iy17a4

I mean you don’t need the decades of research showing belligerent police actions and all this military gear is an escalatory dynamic. Just look at this absurdity.https://twitter.com/farfarraway/status/1269334454855761920 …

As my piece explains with evidence, cities should stand down the police against the protests. No riot gear, no tear gas or other "non-lethal" weapons—eight people lost eyes already. Meanwhile, protesters should avoid elderly/vulnerable folks for two weeks.https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/06/i-cant-breathe-using-tear-gas-during-pandemic/612673/ …
