So, let's just pull the camera lens out for a second, look at the bigger picture. We have an absolutely botched federal response (some states/cities too) to the pandemic, which continues to this day, but "Stand By Me" is where you draw the line?

No - it’s possible to both criticize the federal response (or lack thereof) and a seeming double standard when it comes to the protests. But in any case, I’m not saying the protesters shouldn’t have sung. I’m saying we should be similarly tolerant of other outdoor gatherings.

Large outdoor funerals and religious services, most obviously. And, in a more general sense, all beaches and parks should be open, with social distancing.

I am ALL for harm reduction guidance on how to do this.

I know. You’re being asked to answer, unfairly, for things other public-health ppl - and the media - said and did.

But you've also got to realize for all your good-faith questions, there is some bit of political opportunism going on here from the right.

For sure. And not fair to have individuals (some of whom did the best work) to answer for the field (which faced the unfair barriers others have noted). But I think figuring out shortcomings and how to fight unfair barriers is the best way to fight opportunism, when it comes.

I don’t see it honestly. I was a Covid hawk back when some public health authorities were saying masks were racist. Greg is the one trying to score points here.

You personally may have been a "hawk", though just like you are now having this conversation perhaps with the very public health people who did a lot to push for harm reduction frameworks, they are also seeing the opportunism which does exist and may not mean you.

And my two-cents is that everyone is more effective in convincing "their" people, so to speak of their own side's shortcomings, missteps etc. It's also good to have "the best of" different groups having these conversations, but taking it back home is where the work happens, imho.
