To the extent there's a backlash over experts downplaying Covid-19 concerns around the protests, it will probably look something like this. Too early to say if it'll exact a lasting toll on expert credibility among many Americans who were previously on board w/ social distancing. https://twitter.com/JDVance1/status/1268290231251472391 …

Here fwiw is one example of the "praise" that Vance is referring to. https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/06/01/867200259/protests-over-racism-versus-risk-of-covid-i-wouldn-t-weigh-these-crises-separate …

I struggle to see Vance’s take here as anything more than interested bad faith nonsense. A small group of epis made a public statement. The idea that anyone has shifted gears on this is really not true. Tens of thousands of police/Nat guard haven’t been able to stop these ...

TBH I'd be fuming, too, at the nonchalant reaction to protests—even as I think they're outdoors and lower risk.2 replies 1 retweet 1 like
I think the complaint with merit is essential activities necessarily balance harms, no zero risk act. Many public health people said racism is a public health crisis, protesting is essential. Agree! But outdoor funerals, church services, seeing a dying loved one also arguably so.
