To the extent there's a backlash over experts downplaying Covid-19 concerns around the protests, it will probably look something like this. Too early to say if it'll exact a lasting toll on expert credibility among many Americans who were previously on board w/ social distancing. https://twitter.com/JDVance1/status/1268290231251472391 …

I railed against the beach/park shaming, too. It wasn't scientific and it just went on and on and on. With no follow up, and thus constantly ignoring the lack of major outbreaks from the alleged incidents. People have a point—even as I think protests are an essential activity.

Public health epidemiology has been tremendous during the pandemic, but the field has been poor at communicating the real risks of COVID19 transmission to the general public. Much of that owes to the need to respond in real-time w/o sufficient data.

Many protestors are wearing masks. I didn’t see a mask on the police officers holding down George Floyd.

Are protests low risk? Really? Covid-19 can remain asymptomatic for 17 days, and ICU is usually not required for another 7-15 days; so the entire American Critical Care system could COLLAPSE by July 4, and be broken for the for massive Aug 1 wave from July 4 ignorance.
