About the the risk of COVID from the protests. Please note that, to date, there are very few known cases of outdoor transmission at all, but crowding 100 people into an indoors space overnight? Yes, that's how you get a spike. Jails and detention, not protesting, is the big risk.https://twitter.com/nomoniker_/status/1267611747667640321 …

All of us were basically on our way home. They took us to a large garage with at least 100 other people they arrested that night. I say arrested, but I’m not actually sure. Talking to others, no one was given a reason why they were stopped, no one was read Miranda rights etc 6/

Before the inevitable pile-on (always happens) about where was I when people were scolding folks for going to beaches and parks? I wrote a piece two months ago saying emerging evidence shows outdoor transmission risk is low, and called to keep parks open.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1247546543051345926 …

All over the world, the authorities are closing down parks and trails—but that's unsustainable, counterproductive and probably even harmful. Instead, we should adapt to the pandemic and retool them for social-distancing. It's certainly a risk, and many epidemiologists have provided harm reduction advice—masks, drums instead of shouting, distance. I'll link to a thread where I add my advice on helmets and shatterproof goggles. Still, jails and detention are the real risk.https://twitter.com/MaureenDowdTwit/status/1267891869268226050 …

What about hundreds or thousands of people marching in close proximity for an hour or more, often shouting or chanting? Seems much more dangerous than small groups of people simply standing around near other groups in a park.

My thread with harm reduction advice on protesting during a pandemic and being near protests when police are behaving the way they are now. It's unconscionable to crowd people indoors right now simply because they're protesting or merely breaking curfew.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1266791481647534082 …

All good advice. Also, especially if you’re a journalist reporting from the front lines, consider wearing shatterproof goggles in addition to a helmet. Getting hit by a canister/tracer in the head or eye is usually the biggest threat in these situations. https://twitter.com/epiellie/status/1266752753797410822 …

We could see a spike from outdoor protesting, especially with packed crowds, yelling—and more so if people aren't wearing masks. It *is* a risk. But, to date, outdoors has been very low risk. But we *know* for sure indoors (jails/detention) is a high risk.https://twitter.com/CulturalAsthma/status/1267893393402875908?s=20 …

Folks, please send me your stories! Did they pack people indoors after arresting them? Were you tear gassed especially at close quarters? Did they make you take your mask off? We should document this. I'll try to collate and share.https://twitter.com/boreazepam/status/1267893677109714948 …

approx 4.500 ppl have been arrested (that does not conclude those detained on buses etc for hours & let go). the first thing they do is take your mask and shove you in a crowded space. it’s not great

Of course, as predicted, tons of people in my mentions are complaining to me about the lock-down rules. This is why I dislike quote-tweets. Folks, I've been arguing that parks and beaches should be open—with sensible guidelines—for months! Wrong target. 🙄https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1247546543051345926 …

I've tried a good deal to say that much of the beach/park scolding was not evidence-based. It's also not a bad thing to change one's mind as evidence emerges but on this particular topic, I haven't just decided outdoors is less risk because of protests.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1251710115700490241 …

I’m looking at this picture and all I see is people with way more than six feet between them in a sunny and well-ventilated area. I wish they had masks on, but what’s else is the problem? Given how large beaches are, is there a safer way to go outdoors? I don’t get beach outrage. https://twitter.com/travisakers/status/1251260796476305409 …

This year's NYC St. Paddy's parade was cancelled due to coronavirus concerns. Mardis Gras was the month before that (it maybe should've been cancelled for the same reason). It remains to be seen if (and with what restrictions) either event will happen in 2021.
