I don’t think a lot of people have a sense of what a failed state actually means or feels like. Not even a failed municipality. A terribly-run one, perhaps.

One day after 9/11, I walked the streets of DC. It was just me and tourist knickknack vendors—immigrants from war-torn countries. They're like "Where is everyone? That was *yesterday*." Explained Americans had no experience with mass political violence; no tourists for a while.

One thing that's converging is the crisis black people experience routinely re:police is maybe spreading to broader groups now. Journalists are being targeted, teargas on vanilla marchers, insecurity in one's own neighborhood. Hard to predict where that one will go though.
