I don’t think a lot of people have a sense of what a failed state actually means or feels like. Not even a failed municipality. A terribly-run one, perhaps.

One day after 9/11, I walked the streets of DC. It was just me and tourist knickknack vendors—immigrants from war-torn countries. They're like "Where is everyone? That was *yesterday*." Explained Americans had no experience with mass political violence; no tourists for a while.

It's certainly a terrible crisis right now. Could get much worse. But being grounded in reality is useful. And I'm gonna lose it if people keep saying "We wouldn't do this even in Iraq." Yeah, where the military lost track of the number of civilians it killed just in checkpoints.
