My piece on why the online rage against Amy Cooper's attempted swatting of a black man (yes, yes, it was a form of swatting) was *necessary* because until such crimes are prosecuted, that's the only deterrence. Until then, I'm for *this* social media mob. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2020/05/case-social-media-mobs/612202/ …pic.twitter.com/FNr28HaxY2

I do not think that mob “justice” is justice at all. It is the antithesis of justice. We must always oppose mobs.

Call it online fury. It's sometimes dangerous and destructive, but it is also sometimes the voice of the unheard. Think of it as free speech at scale, maybe that will sound better to you. They didn't actually show up at her house. Alternative in cases like this is no justice.

Your are saying this because you agree with the targeting of this. This is very primitive thinking. This is the whole reason we evolved a formal judicial system. I think you might want to think about this some more.

That's not what I'm saying. When there is no legal protection for victims (and there is none; neither for police misconduct against black people nor cases like hers which are akin to swatting), why are we instead mad at many many many people expressing their fury?

Expressing fury is fine. I support that. But calling for her to be fired seemed wrong. And I also find notions of proportionality to be key part of most judicial systems. Starting with Old Testament even. Remember the woman who made an inappropriate joke an route to South Africa?

But do read my piece. The woman with that joke is exactly my example of when this kind of mass speech goes wrong. It’s not an unalloyed dood. For the firing: being this racist is a reasonable consideration for an employer. (Not considering is harms to people she oversees as VP).

Boycotts are a form of punishing behavior via economic sanctions too. I don’t think they’re always right, but neither are they always wrong. Which is part my point.

In Sri Lanka Muslim businesses are being boycotted out of bigotry. (Part of my research last year). That’s a clear wrong. South Africa was boycotted as a protest against racist oppression. Not the same. And there are mixed cases in between.

Anyway, I wrote that piece to say, like boycotts, this is not some unalloyed good, but we must consider harms on all sides when evaluating what just happened, including the appalling lack of legal recourse for black people. We can’t even protect them against the police. /
