My piece on why the online rage against Amy Cooper's attempted swatting of a black man (yes, yes, it was a form of swatting) was *necessary* because until such crimes are prosecuted, that's the only deterrence. Until then, I'm for *this* social media mob. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2020/05/case-social-media-mobs/612202/ …pic.twitter.com/FNr28HaxY2

I do not think that mob “justice” is justice at all. It is the antithesis of justice. We must always oppose mobs.

When peaceful change is made impossible, violent change is made inevitable. There are better ways to go about this- we as a country have continued to fail at actually following them.

Oh, there are statutes on false arrest, and falsified arrest reports. OTOH, getting a prosecutor interested is quite another matter.

There are laws on the books, and people who swat (which I think is similar to what she was doing) have been sentenced to 20 years in prison. But the laws on the books are never applied to these cases. Which is the problem.

I agree, in the sense that the laws on the books aren't applied. I dont agree that swatting would be the most appropriate law to suggest she broke. Her intent seems pretty obvious, especially given our countries continued injustice specifically in regards to police and black men

The difference is that the SWAT Team gets *really* POed at being called falsely, and leans on prosecutors, hard. False or exaggerated reports are daily occurrences for beat officers, and ‘meh’ doesn’t get referred, or prosecutorial action.

I think one could very easily make the argument that her intent was to cause at the bare minimum bodily harm to that man, given the context of the situation known. And swatting just doesnt seem to really imo address the severity of what thst outcome could have been.

But ultimately like you say, the laws on the books arent really applied to these cases... so how else is change supposed to come if not by coordinated national outrage towards her? An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind but the alternative to doing nothing, imo is worse

The problem is that the police have been over-militarized and that they are *available* to be exploited by a racist. That's the core problem -- that we all know calling a cop on a black guy is putting his life in danger.
