Facebook's own researchers found that “64% of all extremist group joins are due to our recommendation tools" and that “our recommendation systems grow the problem.” Facebook VP for policy Joel Kaplan (known for throwing a party for Kavanaugh after confirmation) nixed any action.https://twitter.com/dseetharaman/status/1265312209602674688 …

New from @JeffHorwitz & me: Facebook spent years studying the its role in polarization, according to sources and internal documents. One internal slide laid out the issue like so. ”Our algorithms exploit the human brain's attraction to divisiveness.” https://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-knows-it-encourages-division-top-executives-nixed-solutions-11590507499?mod=searchresults&page=1&pos=1 …

I wonder whether that 64% "due to" attribution was credible or just a "last click" analysis, which we know typically hugely overstates the role of recommendation algorithms

Wouldn't it be great to have some independent research from people who are neither employed by or have any financial entanglement with Facebook? This is their own internal research team, that's all we know. In any case, it's a finding that the algorithm pushes in that direction.

I guess I'm just wondering whether things turned out to be so striking on further scrutiny. Not specific to extremismhttps://twitter.com/deaneckles/status/1025160989254279173 …

YouTube's @nealmohan is quoted as saying >70% of watch time is driven by recommendations. I'm guessing this is based on naive attribution, not (e.g.) randomized experiments, but would welcome a clarification. https://www.cnet.com/news/youtube-ces-2018-neal-mohan/ …

Without transparency and data access, we'll never know. Let's say it's wrong by an order of magnitude; it's only 6-7 percent. It's still a sizable effect considering it's billions of people. It's also one vector among others, so may never be attributable as single number.

I mean, socialization is a significant force in human society and that's what it's feeding. Like any significant dynamic, I doubt we'll ever have a single number that captures the full impact. What I'm getting it is that FB researchers thought it's a sizable, important impact.

FB admitted that they most likely helped get trump elected but said they wouldn't be changing anything in that regard. These little tidbits about what they do wrong and how they aren't changing is just a big FU to anyone who disagrees. #CloseTheBookOnFacebook
