Yes, of course. Hydroxychloroquine was already on the research agenda as a potential drug against coronaviruses before this. The tragedy is that we should’ve looked into all this more, especially after SARS. Coronaviruses got too little attention/funding.https://twitter.com/toxicpath/status/1264672894279454720 …

They may turn out to be no benefit, there may turn out to be no harm. We don’t yet know. The opposite of ignorance and a whirlwind of distracting, incoherent statements isn’t just saying the opposite.

I know. It is very very hard to resist playing his game. "To be sure, if you turn your back on Mishnory and walk away from it, you are still on the Mishnory road." (That's from Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. LeGuin).https://twitter.com/jbonewald/status/1264678854838321154 …

Right now, there are multiple randomized studies looking at HCQ. Let them run their course. Meanwhile, we aren't talking about how much more research we need for other potential treatments. Or what we should learn from our relative lack of research after SARS in 2003.

He floods the zone. The effective counter-strategy hasn't been developed. It's hard. But it's not knee-jerk response. From the book I wrote before he was elected: 21st century censorship is flooding the zone, creating confusion and forcing public to focus on his own terms.pic.twitter.com/nfPWiKZSzD

96,032 patients, 671 hospitals, 6 continents. "our findings suggest not only an absence of therapeutic benefit but also potential harm with the use of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine drug regimens" https://www.thelancet.com/action/showPdf?pii=S0140-6736%2820%2931180-6 …pic.twitter.com/E2pCDHXZoR

Right, this is a troubling large observational study, but the more important question is what RCTs reveal.

There have been plenty of RCTs of HCQ for other diseases where potential harms have been demonstrated. Is there a reason to ignore that data?

The fearmongering alone has pushed my wife's hcq clinical trial back significantly. People say they're interested in joining, then end up changing their mind because of all the scary press.
