Yes, unfortunately that's the kind of wrong (was not backed by science at the time of writing) that surely led to more dead people. Very sad: health authorities in the West were too slow to catch up with the science, and too many science writers do not look at evidence.

I can’t see what was tweeted — it was deleted — but many science journalists like myself did look very closely at the evidence and still do, and I’ve faithfully communicated it from the start.

Sad how the recommendations for hand-washing and distancing were just communicated, without the same hand-wringing and mixed messaging as for masks. Surely, there was little direct evidence for these as well, only logical extrapolation from known facts about other viruses

Yep! Hand washing poses all the “alleged” false security”risks. Plus novel virus so limited to non-existing data. But of course it’s a good precaution!

There is actually a great deal of evidence for hand-washing and social distancing, far more, and far more conclusively, than for masks. These issues are complicated, as much as some would like to oversimplify them.

Where is the evidence for "false sense of security" for masks? Conversely, if it's just a conjecture, where is the evidence that hand-washing doesn't similarly cause a false sense of security? Making up complications without evidence isn't preserving complexity. It's just wrong.

I haven’t proposed there’s evidence for false security (tho I can point to empirical evidence daily in my everyday life). Concerns re masks also include potential risk of transmission & there’s an evidence base for that in HCW pops. We don’t know if/how it translates to public.

I’ve repeatedly said I’m not against masks. I wear one & promote the message of wearing them. I agree w many points you’ve made about their value beyond infection control (particularly wrt stigma). I respect your scholarship & writings on this. 1/2

On side note, I also think there’s substantial value in looking at the public wearing face shields, which seem to have some advantages over masks. But I hesitate to cover it bc mask issue has been a mess in US. One thing I had def had right about masks is cultural resistance.

Evidence for hand-washing effectiveness for COVID-19 is basically non-existent AFAICT. The CDC makes it pretty clear that surface-mediated transmission of COVID-19 is not likely to be significant. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/how-covid-spreads.html …pic.twitter.com/Ycs0uODDjr

We know that hand washing destroys the lipid layer on the virus, but that's not much use if the virus isn't spread in practice through surfaces. May as well do it anyway, since it's a simple precaution to take, but not a good idea to focus on it.
