Friends, do we have data about the rate of infection for flight personnel? How safe is it to ride on a plane with gloves, N95 masks, etc?

I had been quite wary initially but, interestingly, plane travel is in my list of dogs that have been notably quiet--very few suspected cases despite the fact that it should be one of the easiest things to trace, and we had cases with SARS. Maybe something about their filtration?

I’m wondering what the main difference is between the heavy toll on MTA workers in NYC compared to relative quiet when it comes to airline staff

Yeah, we have no carnage among airline staff and no known big outbreaks that we've seen in restaurants, factories etc. It is curious. Cabin filtration is the only thing I can think of, to be honest, but not all my expertise. I just note the lack of cases/outbreaks.

I consider the lack of many cases/examples to be a data point itself, I've provisionally mentally marked it as a lower risk activity: when and if I have a need to take such a trip, it is not an automatic no like some other things are (no indoor conferences, no restaurants...)

can we get the rest of the "automatic no" list? I'm sure a lot of people would be interested.

I also thought that planes would be a hotspot, especially bc of air circulation, but there was an article in a newspaper that this isn't actually an issue, the air is a mix of outside and reused, which is HEPA filtered, and, most importantly, airflow is vertical, not horizontal.

It was a newspaper, so take it with a grain of salt (or better, a whole shaker), but they sounded pretty certain.

Planes are one of the few indoor environments with really good filtration. Seems like people near infected passengers would still be at risk, but maybe not with masks and spacing people out far enough. Cruise ship comparison maybe useful -- no HEPA filters there.

That’s good to know, my daughter’s boyfriend is injured and she needs to go see him. I am worried about airports though.

Aircraft air is also bone dry and an entire plane's worth is circulated inside three minutes, filtered with HEPA filters...
