And really, should I really call the IT help line every time I get a scammer emailing me that my dean is in immediate and dire need of gift cards (but he's in a meeting so can't call, tragically). Don't they have, like, actual work to do rather than telling me to ignore it?

You know how we prevent phishing? Security keys. Authentication apps. Not pages of instructions on how to examine the to: and from: fields and URL links and blah blah. As per my gravestone on everything: we know how to solve these problems, just need the infrastructure...

my security training repeatedly went back to "ask IT if it's legit" but 2 weeks ago i got an email apologizing for the monitor i asked for taking so long (3 months) so i'm pretty sure if we all asked IT even half as often as they told us to they'd need to hire 10x more people
-
i literally replied to their apology with "no problem at all, also what are you talking about?"

I was surprised by the amount of automated nagging I got this semester as a *visitor*. (I share similar... opinions... on the design of the training.) The helpdesk folks must really want to be overwhelmed with phone calls!

Most accepted password rules are bad. The author of the white paper they're based on admits his naive mistakes today. Much security advice is bad. Have you heard "only open email attachments from known contacts?". Idiotic, a total misunderstanding of how email viruses spread
