I can’t really envision the scenario where this seemed like a potential career ender, even in March.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1262065440857169921 …

My counter theory of this turn is that most people hadn’t really heard of the claim that masks don’t work, even if it was the official line from the WHO and CDC. And so most people who push masks now didn’t really turn at all. https://twitter.com/aelkus/status/1261994903007113216?s=21 … https://twitter.com/Aelkus/status/1261994903007113216 …

And what’s more the present resistance to masks isn’t from people who are inflexibly following (outdated) WHO/CDC advice! It’s that they think masks are against the American way of life or are communist or whatnot.

As a result, it gives people plenty of room to dunk on their stupidity without bringing in (or even needing to know about) WHO/CDC stuff.

But there's data, not just theory. 1-The anti-maskers constantly cite the previous recommendations and old articles. 2-The people like me saying masks work just two months ago got treated like anti-vaxxers. 3-The masks don't work/they hurt articles were widespread and viral.

Pretty skeptical in advance of the data. How many people had even heard of the recommendation against masks before say March 1st? Like 3% of the public? How many have heard of the recommendation even now?

And what’s more the current pocket of resistance to masks is not fueled much at all by people who especially listen to WHO/CDC advice—it’s not WHO stans. There’s just not going to be much of a causal connection between the former recommendation and the present resistance.

I recommend even glancing at their activism, and you will see they constantly bring up the point I'm making. It's very prominent, not subtle. Plus, WHO declared pandemic on Mar 11, it was news number one for weeks and health authorities got amplified. Anyway, that's strong data.

Maybe there’s a small pocket of leaders within the movement who point to the WHO/CDC stuff, but the vast majority of people who are reluctant to wear masks have either not heard of this or are not influenced by it. They wouldn’t trust the WHO/CDC!
