It's important not just to remember this (the incorrect guidance on masks) but to study and understand it. When I wrote my "masks work" op-ed on March 17 for the New York Times, I honestly thought I was likely ending my career as a public writer. https://twitter.com/Aelkus/status/1261994903007113216 …

The public health argument was very hard to get across.https://twitter.com/binneystreetbio/status/1262090664541650946 …

I'm not anti-mask per se, but I also don't feel that are all that helpful, given the emerging evidence of aerosolized spread leading to the vast majority of transmission. I also cite modern articles/papers. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/04/data-do-not-back-cloth-masks-limit-covid-19-experts-say … National academy of Science has found the same

Misses the point that masks are to protect others from you not you from others.

I have been catching up on Mr. Robot and while there was isolated mask-wearing in the States pre-covid, I sense that it will be more prevalent but voluntary, just like the show - it’s amazing how prescient that small aspect of the show is.

Really? It really looks a lot more like a performance of loyalty to their precious death cult leader.

I think the problem was one of collective vs individual perspective. In the west most of us see a health intervention from a “protect yourself” perspective, and masks are quite ineffective at protecting the wearer. But from a collectivist protective, if we can all agree...(1/2)

(2/2) to wear masks to protect each other, then they work. In the west, products are evaluated for their ability to protect the user, not their society-wide ~75% reduction in transmission

The point is mute but the body of evidence shows no effect in public settings and your analysis did not include research on public health interventions. With an accountabillity to the public you should have waited for current research studies to finish.https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04337541?cond=Face+mask+covid&draw=2&rank=1 …

The anti-mask framing is intentional and not organic. Remember the NRA’s framing of mass shootings as “the price we pay for freedom”. The anti-lockdown protests were set up through GOP social media and fundraising networks.
