It's important not just to remember this (the incorrect guidance on masks) but to study and understand it. When I wrote my "masks work" op-ed on March 17 for the New York Times, I honestly thought I was likely ending my career as a public writer. https://twitter.com/Aelkus/status/1261994903007113216 …

As usual, all of that gets mixed together. To this day, anti-maskers cite the old articles (especially the ones that falsely said masks make things worse), screenshots of CDC guidelines/tweets, WHO... It's embedded in a individualistic/liberty framework.https://twitter.com/TeflonFong/status/1262075578812948481 …

yesterday a guy from ONE CAR OVER yelled at me at a red light because he was so perturbed at the sight of me wearing a mask in my own car. he opened w/ "your mask won't save you," followed by "are you aware of the facts or blindly following the news" and "only 1% die from this"

Initial messaging was that surface contact was main source of spread, as in many common viral diseases.

The worst of it was when lots of doctors, nurses & govs were spouting the anti-mask propaganda in hopes of preventing PPE shortages. In their fear they destroyed a lot of their own credibility. Shortages are a governmental problem, not mask-effectiveness one.

Reading between the lines of the "don't wear masks" message - it always seemed as if it was about preserving PPE for medical personnel, given the shortages. The advice of why not to wear them, never quite added up as making sense.

They could have just asked us to fashion our own cloth face coverings which would have sufficed. They could have given examples and instructions for safe reuse.

I heard “they make things worse” from a top NYC hospital system doc. She said masks make people touch face when putting on, taking off, and adjusting. This was back in March or early April.
