This is not a counter point but there are countries like Denmark where masks were never adopted but where the virus is practically contained. What emerges is that masks do work but have marginal effects compared to other actions. Fixation on masks is not really useful.

The “mask wearing countries performed well” is indeed strong evidence but very possibly correlation. Mask-wearing countries do a number of important things differently.
