my frustration is all those around me are using thin tech-fabric buffs/balaclavas. USA's lack of available surgical masks leaves us wearing "whatever we can find".
-
There’s tons of alternative, it’s massive failure on governments outside Asia to not guide effective mask wearing

I have some issues with their design/have my doubts this is a good model, because I suspect the barrier modifies auxiliary behaviour (e.g. them keeping more distance etc.) It's also, relatively speaking, a lot thicker.

So far, I'm still inclined towards the past RCTs which showed zero (uninfected)/marginal (symptomatic/source control) efficacy for face masks, but if there's one bright spot, we might finally be able to put that to rest with all the studies being conducted during this pandemic.

Doesn't the paper towel create too much resistance to air flow? Forcing the air to flow around the mask instead of through the fabric would reduce effectiveness.

I recommend avoiding trying to figure stuff out from first principles in one's head and look at the research itself and see if if the researchers are utterly incapable of thinking of the most basic things by themselves.
