There are enough reports from healthy young people of this kind of thing that we need to quantify morbidity, not just mortality. How many severe but sublethal cases are there? Going all the way back to February, WHO said 19% were severe or critical.https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1232059925934870529 …
Balaji Srinivasan added,
Balaji SrinivasanVerified account @balajisEven if 80% of cases are mild or even wholly asymptomatic, the virus is highly contagious so N can get large fast. The sheer number of severe cases can then overwhelm a healthcare system — as happened in Wuhan. https://twitter.com/who/status/1229430298997350402?s=21 …Show this thread8 replies 8 retweets 93 likesShow this thread -

Related to severity are long-term effects. A disease that an older person can breathe in at a restaurant and die from a few weeks later is the kind of thing you take seriously, even in "mild" cases. Severity likely correlates with long-term damage.https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1237508931770929152 …
Balaji Srinivasan added,
Balaji SrinivasanVerified account @balajisWhat are the long-term effects of COVID19? Some have a binary mental model: either you die, or you live & all is well. But with SARS & MERS, many patients had long-term respiratory issues. This paper urges follow-up imaging to see if COVID19 is similar. https://www.ajronline.org/doi/10.2214/AJR.20.22969 … pic.twitter.com/2iOAXrO2hvShow this thread1 reply 14 retweets 71 likesShow this thread -

Now that 1M+ Americans have had COVID-19, we'll see stats on morbidity, not just mortality. And survivors will be telling their stories. Many who have a mental model of "if you don't die it's not that bad" will hear otherwise from folks in their network.https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1259361213810569216 …
Balaji Srinivasan added,
Balaji SrinivasanVerified account @balajisA wave of just-the-flu-bros has crested over society, arguing the virus is “mild”. Next is the wave of its-not-the-flu-bro!, from folks who got one of these “mild” cases. They’ll tell friends, who will voluntarily self-isolate. So the 2nd wave of lockdown will be decentralized. https://twitter.com/ElissaBeth/status/1259301645776805890 …Show this thread11 replies 18 retweets 88 likesShow this thread
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/14/health/coronavirus-strokes.html … We need proper follow up. Can’t tell prevalence of anything with survivors yet. But many stories.
