So the terrible carnage in NYC goes back to this. The city officials decided to gamble with lives and the people weren’t warned by officials or others despite the terrible Lombardy and Wuhan examples that had just happened.https://twitter.com/tomgara/status/1261049462618763264 …

So the same person, who didn’t think the pandemic required shutting down large or any gatherings and didn’t think what happened in Italy could happen in NYC, is in charge of setting up contact tracing in NYC. Unlike a few beaches opening, this seems like a real scandal.

There are a lot of unknowns still with this virus. There will be some mistakes only in hindsight. But after the tragedies in Wuhan and Lombardy, “it cannot happen here” shouldn’t fly. The bigger the downside, the more precaution is warranted.

We may live to find out that NYC lost 30k+ lives because of staggering incompetence at the top while the rest of the country adapted, having watched the shitstorm unfold in real time

But the rest of the country has not adapted. 88,237 deaths is hardly an adaptation. It’s a tragedy and a disgrace.

Why would the head of a hospital system believe this kind of myth of American exceptionalism and make decisions based on it? How idiotic!

It wasn’t American exceptionalism he believed in. It was New York City exceptionalism. An affliction that also lets them pretend that filthy subways, broken roads, incalculable graft, and planes that never take off on time is charming.

No one knew at that point, & biosecurity quarantine has huge costs. In future global epidemics, NYC residents should be locked down right away. NYC distributed COVID19 across most of the US, accordg to the NYTimes, & that makes sense because of its transit centrality and density.

Not so. NYC has the same tools available as Seattle but they took different path. Embracing vs ignoring science. This is a long read, but there’s no way you can get through it and still hold that view. NYC leaders should fact consequences https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/05/04/seattles-leaders-let-scientists-take-the-lead-new-yorks-did-not …
