I wanted something like that for a long time, even wrote about in five years ago when I thought it was bewildering that it didn't already exist. https://medium.com/message/spotify-but-for-the-titanic-a-proposal-for-the-future-of-news-and-publishing-40c41fbebe7b …https://twitter.com/reedlauber/status/1261009115838464001 …

I wonder if it'd be possible to have some system shared between magazines/papers where, like, you paid $20 a month and got 10 credits you could use for different articles or whatever, and they got a percentage of the pool as a result? a universal subscription
-
it is such a solvable problem!!!!

Surprising that someone hasn’t attempted a platform where you can pay a single monthly subscription, and then have a browser plugin that registers and pays for each view.
-
It's been attempted many times I think. Different outlets don't want to hand control of sales over to an 3rd party, so it's a tough sell.

Such a solvable problem, and it doesn’t even need to be a buck. It could be 50 cents, even 25 cents. Lots of people would click that without thinking twice.
-
The obstacle to solving it is doing it in a way that's not a huge tracking vector. Need anonymous initial payment and ideally anonymous proof of existing payment for repeat viewing.

It used to exist and still kind of does: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blendle

There was a company called QPass that tried this about 20 years ago. I recall they came and gave a demo when I was a web dev at http://usnews.com . They disappeared in the dot-com bust of the early aughts.

Also, related pet peeve — I am a
@guardian subscriber, I have the app, I’m logged into the app. If I open a Guardian article in Safari, it doesn’t know I’m a subscriber and it bugs me about subscription. I’m ok with a cookie for this purpose
