Dr. Fauci predicts late 2020/early 2021 for when we get a vaccine *candidate*—and then there is the question of manufacturing and distributing it and vaccinating masses. I don't think people are digesting reality. We probably have *at best* a year to go with significant threats.https://twitter.com/BhadeliaMD/status/1260217869587173376 …

On vaccines, Dr Fauci says candidate vaccines will move to phase 2/3 in late spring/early summer. We will know if we have a successful candidate by late fall/early winter.

„Problems digesting reality“, clearly. Also dealing with contingency. Some people don’t seem to understand the concept.

Gates is putting the top 7 contenders into mass production before phase 3 is done, so that when we have a good one, we have some already made and in production. Human corona virus vaccines have a nasty history (two made things worse, none have ever been approved), be careful!

Chunk of delay is waiting for effectiveness data after a vaccine has passed safety trial, correct? Why not allow some people to opt-in and pay for vaccine with yet unproven effectiveness (but good science behind it) if people are going to have to out and about anyway?

Fall 2021 would seem our best (if we fortunate) shot at widespread vaccine availability, I think?

Right-- & that is assuming that in 1.5 years, we don't have any significant variation in viral strain; that vaccine immunity is robust and actually lasts; and that anti-vaxxers don't ruin it. Despite my tweets, I am actually an eternal optimist in real life.

The question to Fauci needs to be we WILL open the economy and we WILL send students back to school. Increase deaths and woes me is not acceptable. How do you solve the problem? And if you can’t, let’s find the people that can (and they are out there).
