Hong Kong is dense with a crowded subway. It has a lot of travel from China. And yet, no local cases for weeks now. No Lombardy-style lock down either. And, no, it's not the competent government. I wrote about how the people of Hong Kong saved themselves. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2020/05/how-hong-kong-beating-coronavirus/611524/ …pic.twitter.com/ia5VHV6Ycb

This is the reality. We are where we are. Along with everything else, in the middle of all this, we have to work on the long-term work of fixing our governance and society.https://twitter.com/LogTechEric/status/1260210112184168453 …

This is the answer people. We have now had enough time to take stock of the situation. It's *us* who will lead a return to anything approaching normalcy - by being smart and adapting to new lifestyle realities - not our government or a knight in shining armor.

How the people of Hong Kong saved themselves. A long hard earned respect for public health from the Plague of 1894 to SARS and the Avian flu, Hong Kongers have learned to incorporate public health into their lifestyles @zeynep https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2020/05/how-hong-kong-beating-coronavirus/611524/ …

Yeah, it's funny. I keep hearing about how Asians are more "obedient" to explain their success in this pandemic, but in Hong Kong they *rebelled* against their government to fight COVID and succeeded. (Also Asian countries have big movements all the time!)https://twitter.com/onlyjustnow/status/1260267402152914944 …

Hong Kongers seem more rebellious than Americans. They’ve been literally fighting their govt for a while now.

Also thanks an enormous amount to @rachel_cheung1 who helped with the research and fact-checking! As the article states, I could not go to Hong Kong to do my research in the field the way I normally do. She was amazing to work with!https://twitter.com/rachel_cheung1/status/1260254636440604673 …

#HongKong’s success isn’t a case of what the govt did correctly but how we managed despite the govt. “Fight Virus Together,” Carrie Lam claimed. But it’s been clear who she’s targeting with social distancing rules in the name of public health. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2020/05/how-hong-kong-beating-coronavirus/611524/ …

great article. Inspiring. But in place of a mobilized unified localized citizen network facing a limited outbreak, ea US State (w Fed support!) needs to shelter and isolate until a regime of test-trace-isolate can occur. we simply can't hope to emulate HK at the is time.

This is also an example of good governance. Self-governing bodies can work well through collective action among the common people. The key element is here the social capital of Hong Kong's people, namely, their network and informal and formal institutions.
