This is the reality. We are where we are. Along with everything else, in the middle of all this, we have to work on the long-term work of fixing our governance and society.https://twitter.com/LogTechEric/status/1260210112184168453 …

Yes, exactly this. Plus a movement that sprung to action despite an unpopular government.https://twitter.com/statesdj/status/1260214598441074689 …

Yeah, it's funny. I keep hearing about how Asians are more "obedient" to explain their success in this pandemic, but in Hong Kong they *rebelled* against their government to fight COVID and succeeded. (Also Asian countries have big movements all the time!)https://twitter.com/onlyjustnow/status/1260267402152914944 …

Also thanks an enormous amount to
@rachel_cheung1 who helped with the research and fact-checking! As the article states, I could not go to Hong Kong to do my research in the field the way I normally do. She was amazing to work with!https://twitter.com/rachel_cheung1/status/1260254636440604673 …Show this thread -

This is the answer people. We have now had enough time to take stock of the situation. It's *us* who will lead a return to anything approaching normalcy - by being smart and adapting to new lifestyle realities - not our government or a knight in shining armor.

great article. Inspiring. But in place of a mobilized unified localized citizen network facing a limited outbreak, ea US State (w Fed support!) needs to shelter and isolate until a regime of test-trace-isolate can occur. we simply can't hope to emulate HK at the is time.

This is also an example of good governance. Self-governing bodies can work well through collective action among the common people. The key element is here the social capital of Hong Kong's people, namely, their network and informal and formal institutions.

This has always been about how people think and behave in times of crisis, fear. How you think, how you act, who you show up as is more important now than ever. Its never been just about ourselves
