One possible good future - move out to rural area - work remote - change jobs more easily in a truly global labor market - fewer but longer drives with autonomous cars - 24/7 delivery drones - socialize online & in VR Physical social distancing, digital social networking?

You need to import a new species of humans, too.

Well, it’s how many Americans lived in the 1800s. Out on the prairie, spaced out. But better if you include broadband satellite internet and the earning power of the internet megalopolis. Physical regression to the past, digital progression to the future?

People flock to cities for a reason. There is no world in which a vast majority of people are fine with online socializing without the threat of a pandemic. Some things will change sure. Work probably more. But not what people want as desires.

Depends on how real haptic suits will feel. If people can authentically feel a kiss 1000 miles away, most(and especially a new generation) will adopt it. Human physical proximity requires huge energy and is the ultimate barrier to maintaining our humanity and sanity. Or is it?

But how about when we get VR avatars of ourselves that can do the semi physical socializing, with maybe a neural interface option ? I would try that.

even in a global labor market, it's nice to live in at least a town with a few amenities within a short stroll or bike ride or even (gasp) drive

I would move father out in a heartbeat. Or to the coast. Would have already if I knew I could always work remotely. Jobs, schools and internet are what tie me to cities.
