The 1918 Spanish Flu strain is still out there, buried under the ice. Have a nice day! https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/reconstruction-1918-virus.html …

It doesn't matter. 1918 was H1N1 and stuff that has matched it has been circulating. It's not like smallpox which was genuinely eradicated. It evolves, we gain immunity.

tbh if the 1918 strain was released today I don't know how bad it would be the H1N1 strains circulating today are not descended from the 1918 strain (at least not in terms of ; there is likely *some* level of cross-protection but how much is hard to say

that said it's also unclear how much more virulent 1918 flu would be with modern standard of care -some argue that the major killer was secondary bacterial pneumonia, which is straightforward to treat w antibiotics or it's the cytokine storm in which case we'd be fucked

I don't think many people even understand the flu (secondary) vs. this coronavirus (primary) pneumonia distinction. In any case, I don't think 1918 strain is keeping virologists up at night. It's flu; antibiotics for secondary infections; it's H1N1 etc. Now if H5N1 goes h2h 😱😱

1918 keeps us up at night only as an example of what could happen again (and (to a much lesser extent) as a potential bioweapon) H5N1 is certainly scary, but the next really bad pandemic could be Hwhatever/Nwhatever, even another H1N1 strain
