This is why it's important to understand that it's good to both teach people to avoid risky behaviors, and why, but also to teach safety especially when we know some people will do it anyway. Won't teaching safety make them more likely to do it? No, they will just do it unsafely.

People understand this for abstinence-only sex education. As intuition suggests and as research shows, abstinence only sex-ed to teens lead only to .. less safe sex, not less sex. With social-distancing (and other measures) we need to both convince people but also teach safety.

I completely agree, but how can you teach safety effectively to a critical mass of people when the administration, media channels that have monopoly over 30% of the population and very significant number of social media fanatics are fighting science?

Thank you for the voice of reason. My social media feed otherwise looks like you can either fight nurses on the street and demand a haircut, or accept being isolated from society forever and judge those who complain about anxiety and loneliness.

Scientists have an absolutely critical role in educating people about risk. Right now people equate walking through a hallway with what's facing meatpacking plant workers. And part of that is also educating people to accept that scientific understandings can shift, too.

Also love example of traffic crossing signal walk countdown. When it was just the flashing red hand, it was timed to a slower walk than most people’s, & they‘d cross anyway on the chance there was enough time. W/countdown, even if they’re pushing it, at least they know

Ok but to be safe I need others to wear masks, how do we make that happen?
-
I'm doing what I can via: 1. social norming--any time someone can see my face IRL, I'm wearing a mask 2. social media (sharing) 3. Following up with local (city/state) gov because they're not recommending and pushing it like they need to be
