Without commenting on the rest of this letter on the BCG vaccine (trials are underway, there's a shortage, etc.): WHO also trotted this evidence-free "false sense of security" argument against masks. That line will go down in same chapter of history as resistance to hand-washing.pic.twitter.com/123MFbA5tV

The rest of the process with BCG is working as one would expect: there are trials and concern with supply. But "false sense of security" can be applied to any improvement and it has been suggested (and debunked) for everything ranging from helmets to seat-belts to HIV prevention.

Well, that's a little over-egged. There is clear evidence for the protective effect of cycle helmets, for example. There isn't for cloth masks. It's a false equivalence.

There is no evidence of false security or harms from cloth masks, and there never was (I really looked and have never seen WHO or anyone else making that claim cite a good paper). (Not addressing the evidence for masks part. I disagree but that wasn't the point).

There is evidence for risk compensation in general. If it occurs with cycle helmets in particular, the effect is more than cancelled out by the protection by helmets. There needs to be a protective effect for that to happen.

I think this is a minimalist position: https://www.bmj.com/content/bmj/369/bmj.m1435.full.pdf …. I’ve written that there’s strong preponderance of evidence of source control benefits. The harms were always alleged, evidence-free and frankly fairly implausible. I agree sometimes do nothing is warranted. Not now.

And I've written that your 'strong preponderance of evidence' doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

Well I guess we will disagree, but the scientific consensus even in Western nations is moving to accept the already-existing consensus among the (obviously excellent) infectious disease specialists in Taiwan, Hong Kong etc. about masks efficacy for source control.

For clarity, I'm talking about cloth masks, not surgical masks. Best to make the distinction. Surely you aren't claiming a scientific consensus exists about cloth masks.
