What are people's theories of Japan *and* India? Yes, I know both undercount and Japan wore masks. But no real lockdown in Japan, no mass testing in either but both are so much better than NYC or Lombardy, even weeks after lockdowns. What theory explains both Japan and India? https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1258363452889772034 …pic.twitter.com/ca0h3g7tZq

Guess India's covid mortality is low coz of demographics. A small share of the population is older than 60 (about 8%) & median age is less than 30. Still has a large absolute population of elderly though.pic.twitter.com/gxwN5Z2k9a

And then Japan? If age is so strong a factor, Japan should have a carnage.

Japanese people also used masks to avoid disease spread long before Covid. Very culturally entrenched, compared to countries where people are suddenly having to find where to buy them.

% of elderly living in retirement homes vs. living independently or in intergenerational households?

Agree its puzzle. Japan has v high % of elderly above 80 and they are almost 40X times likelier to die than those younger than 40 once in hospital (NHS study below). Implication is that few elderly in Japan have been infected. Dunno how. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.06.20092999v1.full.pdf …pic.twitter.com/UwbMa0PeZs

Difficult to determine how either country has fared without analyses of excess all-cause mortality.

Less physical contact in Japan compared to US. No handshaking and hugging, even between family members. Wearing masks is a social norm. Politeness, respect and personal responsibility. Sliding doors everywhere. People on the street hand out packs of tissue as ad swag.
