To be fair, this is common sense and almost everyone wanted to wear masks (at least in Spain) when the Covid crisis started. Why didn’t they? The government made clear that they shouldn’t because it was worse and, when they finally recommended it, there were no masks to buy...

This is not common sense at all. Assuming such is a common & damaging error in #scicomm. I still have difficulty explaining how #masks work to otherwise intelligent people. (That’s the whole reason I shared this same graphic several days ago. https://twitter.com/tarahaelle/status/1255674702758129668?s=21 …)

This is seriously the best analogy I’ve seen for explaining why to wear a mask and what #masks do and don’t do in terms of protection. pic.twitter.com/tCeANsuivG

It is common sense if someone tells you to wear masks in the first place, of course. Problem was the contradictory messages regarding whether masks were worse (because you end up touching your face and wearing them multiple times) and which masks were more or less effective

It was appropriate not to recommend them to everyone in the beginning to avoid a run on them when shortages existed. (Saying time get cloth would not have prevented a run on surgical masks.) It was appropriate to make sure ppl knew wearing a mask doesn’t protect THEM.

It *is* possible wearing a mask when you don’t need it could increase your own infection risk. It’s a mostly theoretical risk but not entirely. There are valid concerns for risks of universal mask-wearing & evidence for them to substantially reduce community transmission is weak.

There is ALSO enough evidence that universal mask wearing can reduce enough community spread that, on balance, it’s best for now to recommend them *with* social distancing still in place. But all of this is complicated & none is common sense.

So masks might offer *some* protection to you and (more likely) those around you, but absolutely should not be a substitute for social distancing handwashing etc. What's so complicated about that?

I was going to respond w “you don’t work in public health, do you?” But I read your bio, so I’m guessing you simply don’t spend much time with health & sci communication bc what you wrote is actually a VERY complex message for public health communication.

I do a fair bit of science communication and am genuinely curious why you think the messaging is so difficult.

It wasn’t difficult at all. The messaging was botched, and it’s hard for people who botched it to admit it was botced so they make up complications that don’t really exist. That’s why I started writing about it and had no difficulty. People get it once once you’re straight.

Increased risk compared to no masks? Made up. False sense of security? Absolutely not supported by decades of research on other safety devices, no reason to think so here. There was a shortage and authorities botched the message and, sadly, too many science writers followed them.

Not made up—evidence exists. False sense of security in other research? Look at pediatric swim lessons and drowning risk research. I stand by my work and still believe the initial guidance was appropriate. We can respectfully disagree on this point w/o condescension.

No evidence that masks do anything but block some cough droplets. Evidence suggests masks increase face touching and masks don't protect eyes, a big risk in SARS1. Masks also distract from effective PPE in the community, which are face shields. Check out:https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2765525 …

No data in the linked article to support the face-touching, so that must come from other studies?
