NEW: Sat 2 May update of coronavirus trajectories Daily deaths • Brazil, Russia, India 📈 • UK falling 📉 • US may have peaked, but is now plateauing • All descents slower than ascents • Successes in dark blue: Australia, Norway, Austria Live charts http://ft.com/coronavirus-latest …pic.twitter.com/S8UGxQURrK

Why do I say UK & US daily deaths may have peaked? Here’s week-on-week change in daily deaths. This gets rid of weekly reporting patterns and asks, are more people dying than at same point last week? In UK & US, blue bars = now seeing *fewer* deaths than same day last week.pic.twitter.com/5dC7WC8KYV

Now back to the international charts, and cumulative deaths: • US past 60,000 and still sloping upwards • Japan has passed S Korea • UK, Spain, France, Italy converging • Germany faring better than peers • Australia still looks promising All charts: http://ft.com/coronavirus-latest …pic.twitter.com/w8hpJBYwMf

Daily new cases • As with deaths, US may have peaked but no decline in sight. Same for UK. • Brazil & Russia still accelerating • New cases falling in countries that acted early: NZ, Aus, Norway, Austria • Greek uptick was isolated incident • Singapore battling its outbreakpic.twitter.com/I7LwTcOZAJ

Cases in cumulative form: • US curve still rising steadily • Turkey, Russia & Brazil converging on Western European trajectories • Japan has passed Korea’s total, Singapore has passed Japan’s curve: both show the danger of thinking a country has dealt with Covidpic.twitter.com/zYBtlojrdS

Did people actually claim Japan had dealt with its outbreak? All I’ve seen has been how they never truly grappled with it, never did proper testing or isolation and are just delayed in everything (except mask wearing).

Early narratives definitely had Japan bracketed with the likes of HK & SGP as success stories, and there was a lot of pushback to accusations that they just weren't testing enough.

I got a chorus of complaints asking me to remove my old annotation saying Japan wasn't testing sufficiently, and that this was Western bias.

Well, Japan certainly wasn’t and still isn’t testing enough. To me it’s still an interesting question mark—rather than a place like Singapore that’s dealing with a second wave, or Hong Kong that’s got the second wave beaten back.
