No, no, no, I'm not writing an article explaining why a steak promotion account has ideas that range from reasonable to half-baked to totally wrong. And this simplistic take flies in the face of decade of research on misinformation in the digital age.pic.twitter.com/eSmd0huO7M

I did a double take. What misinformation research are you referring to? Seems like one leading misinfo scholars disagrees:https://twitter.com/LeticiaBode/status/1256222037577814019?s=19 …

It's that thing when a meat product account sums up most of your research agenda for the last five years. We live in strange times, y'all. cc @ekvraga https://twitter.com/steak_umm/status/1255656998500261888 …

I agree with Alex — can you point us to some references about negative effects of social corrections?

Amplification, an ecology effect that cannot be captured by simple "I corrected a thing and it was helpful." That's why "steak-umm" is a simplistic take. Alex knows about all this. (His employer, Facebook doesn't let us do ecology studies. I wish FB folks did them themselves!).

We often get trapped this way: only things that outsiders can research are simple things and that do not capture the ecology effects. Then the companies say "no evidence" but look at this too-simple study (not blaming researchers looking at whatever they got).

I have a few other things I'm working on, but maybe I'll write longer if I can find time, but this isn't a mystery. Don't feed the trolls is a saying for a reason--though that's also simplistic. Generating attention by controversy, hate-clicks etc. are well-understood by outlets.

And this isn't a "feed the trolls" issue... Corrective social commentary is helpful for ordinary conversations and bypassers
