No, no, no, I'm not writing an article explaining why a steak promotion account has ideas that range from reasonable to half-baked to totally wrong. And this simplistic take flies in the face of decade of research on misinformation in the digital age.pic.twitter.com/eSmd0huO7M

I am not a "stay in your lane" academic. I've seen great contributions to many fields from people outside the fields and from non-experts who point out something overlooked or bring a new conceptual toolkit. That said, there is also "this sounds smart" that isn't necessarily so.

This amazing article by @edyong has a quote from me but also a lot of smart discussion on our epistemological challenge—not just the pandemic. Most experts weren't wrong but some non-experts were right and also some leading voices had the wrong message. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/04/pandemic-confusing-uncertainty/610819/ …pic.twitter.com/dp9oCQmudT

Yes, well aware of the problem; this is the very thing misinformation researchers have been grappling with for years. My quote on this is we're trying to fight fires with oxygen tanks.😬 Also, I don't even dislike that account! But it's a, well, indicator.https://twitter.com/DanKeshet/status/1256222375663763456 …

Look, if you write the article, you may not convince steak-umm that they (it?) is wrong, but you'll inform all the other people who read your interaction.

Sorry I was actually just joking by using the exact logic you're arguing against.

I saw someone on here point out that people spreading disinformation thrive on the “debate me!” tactic. They want you to engage and help spread the disinformation.

"Misinformation" has become a bit of a loaded term and a rhetorical tactic to discredit or silence another point-of-view. A central tenet of liberalism is exchange of ideas, and not every theory or study or postulation is going to be correct. In fact, some may be quite wrong.

But the value in hearing even *wrong* theories is, to your point, that sometimes in the act of thoughtfully analyzing *why* they are wrong forces the analyzer to clarify their own position.
