California did everything right, shutting down the state before it needed to. Deaths per 100,000: 5. Florida and Texas did everything wrong, acting too late, leaving beaches open. Deaths per 100,000: Florida: 6, Texas: 3.

Their baseline risk wasn't the same though. They didn't start from the same place or with the same dynamics re:density/travel work patterns. Plus, beaches don't need to be closed, not a big factor. It's the crowded indoors/conferences/workplaces/public transportation that matter.

I mean, there is interesting and unexplained variations and comparisons that I don't think anyone has yet explained, but Texas/CA isn't a good control case. OTOH, Florida nursing homes are probably important to watch and understand.

A Costo is not the same. A meeting room (sitting around a table), or a church (singing) or ... have extended periods of close contact. That is the danger. For Costo - masks and hand sanitizer on entry and exit and you should be good. Beaches should be ok too.

Costco is much less risk than subway/train/bus. Still a risk but there's movement and less talking.

I think it's a really good question how many of our younger cases are grocery store workers. I don't know of a good data source on that but I'm looking.

What I would like to know is in California what portion of our "cases" in the past 30 days have been in jails and care facilities that no amount of locking down will avoid. Cases older than 30 days are dead or recovered and no longer matter.

Cases among "essential employees" are a good barometer of how much is still circulating in the community but cases among jails and nursing homes really aren't an indication of community spread.
