California did everything right, shutting down the state before it needed to. Deaths per 100,000: 5. Florida and Texas did everything wrong, acting too late, leaving beaches open. Deaths per 100,000: Florida: 6, Texas: 3.

What I would like to know is in California what portion of our "cases" in the past 30 days have been in jails and care facilities that no amount of locking down will avoid. Cases older than 30 days are dead or recovered and no longer matter.

Cases among "essential employees" are a good barometer of how much is still circulating in the community but cases among jails and nursing homes really aren't an indication of community spread.
