Yeah, I’m going to have to reread because I can’t remember if there were conditions, but it lines up with what @zeynep has been writing too. Even homemade masks make a difference, and they make places like the grocery store a lot less infectious.

Masks only work if used correctly. And seriously, everytime someone slides their mask down under their nose or under their chin and breathes on the outside---may as well throw it away. Same if they touch anything and touch their eyes, or slide fingers under the edge of a mask

You don’t understand what the point of masks is.https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/04/dont-wear-mask-yourself/610336/ …

(Masks for the community aren’t PPE).

I'm completely aware that community masks aren't PPE and I get the point about them trying to stop the spray from the wearers mouth---the human factor is the problem. The kind of people who voluntarily wear masks now, are already careful and/or trained. That's not most humans

And disagreeing with you doesn't mean I don't understand the point---I get it, I just work on the assumption that human beings are far more sloppy and error prone than we believe. Carseats are a perfect example. We know they matter but almost everyone still uses them incorrectly

You don’t understand safety devices then. Your points about incorrect misuse were without evidence, irrelevant or confuse community masks with PPE. And, of course kids are safer in a world with carseats. And where on earth are you getting “almost everyone uses them incorrectly”??

Here is just one source, I have plenty more. https://www.safekids.org/post/more-half-car-seats-are-not-installed-correctly …

And that is just installation, never mind usage. Based on NHTSA studies, more than 95% of car seats are used exactly as they should behttps://www.parents.com/baby/all-about-babies/alarming-study-only-5-of-parents-use-infant-car-seats-with-no-mistakes/ …

I’ll look at carseats. Children in cars are safer today. But either way, nothing like that for masks because the alternative is no masks. Since these are not PPE, all that matters is covering mouth/nose. They are better than no masks. “Incorrect use” does not increase risk.

Most of the talk of incorrect use from either studies for a recommendations about PPE. Entire populations of many many countries are perfectly able to wear surgical or cloth masks. There’s nothing complicated here.

They have to learn how and embrace the habits of hand-washing and not touching their face, adjusting the mask, and having enough that they can wash and reuse. Like condoms, it takes time for people to learn how to use them correctly. Those took years for the public to adapt to
