I'm sorry, but talk of "going for herd immunity" is utterly irresponsible. Even if herd immunity is possible (which we don't know), it requires that a vast number of our people die of coronavirus, when in fact we can prevent that. Nor is treatment a "miracle".

I read your entire thread, and it consists mainly of defenses of the bad "herd immunity" tweet. I think the best thing to do would be to delete the tweet and repost without the call for "herd immunity".

No, because eventually we are going to go for herd immunity via a combination vaccine/natural immunity. Do you understand the point? The risk to zero suppression for a year is an uncontrolled fire killing *many more* than a controlled version. Something we have to try to discuss.

That's why it's not a good thing to discuss with quote-tweet dunking. I mean, I can do that, too but what's the point? If you want to advocate we can effectively suppress with no increased risk these epidemiologists are pointing out, argue that. Not we're out to kill people.

If you delete the tweet, I'll happily delete the quote-tweet! I have no desire to start fights. But your tweet is being used to fuel calls for very bad and dangerous things.

If you want to argue with it, why don't you either reply or screenshot the entire thing? I think it's an important discussion to have. I don't think there is a good, risk-free option. It's not my original argument; some of world's top epidemiologists are making this argument.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/04/10/opinion/its-possible-flatten-curve-too-long/ … (There are a bunch of papers there). There is more. This really is about avoiding a scenario like 1918 Fall redux.

Honestly, this might be because "herd immunity" is now associated in people's mind with insane slash-and-burn. There is a real consideration of what we are risking if we try to fully suppress, but then if we can't and then get hit in Fall versus the controlled opening in summer.

my bet is that every country going for a controlled burn strategy vs maximum suppression w/ intensive track test isolate is going to regret it.
