For a long time, I felt like I wasted my time getting a CS degree. My colleagues were doing the same work w/o one. Then I realized that the world works differently for me. You can learn the skills on your own but it is harder to get a job without a degree when you look like me.https://twitter.com/shl/status/1252595895289278467 …

Didn’t get many skills out of the CS part of my degree either, but it was a key requirement for getting the right visa to immigrate to the US. Credentialism opens bureaucratic doors!

Yeah, the category of people who can walk out of college without a degree and land on their feet is not universal at all. (I mean yes everyone completes their degree on stack overflow eventually but some need the paper to even have a chance.).

Guess most degrees are a vetting process. Companies cannot evaluate prospective candidates on every single factor, right? Universities help them in that aspect. Also, self-learning requires a great deal of discipline which many lack. Easier to learn under credit requirements.

It’s often harder for many people (not white, not guy) to get evaluated on “just” skills. Just the way it is.
