We now know *for sure* mass transmission is possible indoors even without coughing/sneezing (pre/asymptomatic). We should all wear masks. I'm not yet seeing many cases of outdoors/surfaces but we should STILL be careful while we wait for studies. Absence of evidence isn't proof.

Also, please note that coughing/sneezing are game changers to the distances we have all been told—especially sneezing—and that's another big reason to recommend universal masks, especially indoors. Many unknowns remain but this we know for sure: CROWDED INDOORS ARE HIGH RISK.

Georgia is considering opening retail, restaurants, nail salons, in-person worship and other indoor places next week. Please feel free to share the study on top of this thread with your friends there: one asymptomatic person in a restaurant infected 10.https://twitter.com/JustinGrayWSB/status/1252330712092590080 …

Check this example flagged by
@jeremyphoward in his super useful FAQ on masks. *94* out of 97 cases in a building worked on the same floor! It really suggests transmission through air is much more important than surfaces like elevator/doorknobs. Mask up! https://www.fast.ai/2020/04/20/skeptics-masks/ …pic.twitter.com/XVF9WeJbig

Can't believe this gets published by the BBC, this late! If you're worried masks can be contaminated by other people's cough and sneezes, what do you think happens to YOUR MOUTH AND NOSE IF you aren't wearing a mask? The other two also make no sense.

This "false sense of security" argument has been trotted out against many safety devices (seat-belts, helmets) and the evidence does not bear it out. No reason/data to think different for face masks. If anything, it's the other way around. See more here: https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202004.0203/v1 …pic.twitter.com/oIPsKROAuH

This is actually a great question. A lot of evidence that talking/singing and maybe just breathing around people from close enough range is sufficient to transmit the virus—and if you have a mask on, the amount one sheds is cut down dramatically.https://twitter.com/LucidLeaguing/status/1252654696029982721 …

Yep, this actually makes a lot more sociological sense, and the experience of Hong Kong/Taiwan etc. support this: widespread mask wearing *signal* solidarity and importance/reminder of the pandemic, and probably encourage *more* distancing/hygiene as well.https://twitter.com/lydiajo/status/1252656232193720320 …

Lydia Bates @lydiajoReplying to @zeynepPurely anecdotally, I don't feel 'safer' wearing a mask (even if I am), I feel more aware of the risks around me. The fact that wearing a mask isn't comfortable is a constant reminder that my environment is potentially hazardous. My mask reminds me that things are not normal.10 replies 87 retweets 339 likesShow this thread -

Hello, would you also recommend the use of the face mask for a healthy and asymptomatic person who lives always alone and moves around alone in outdoor places always keeping a safe distance from others? And in the case of cycling or solitary sporting activity such as running?1/2

Honestly, it is also about making sure other people feel comfortable, too. I don't wear it while cycling, and nobody around here does and everyone keeps plenty of distance. I do, however, have one around my neck ready to pull it up (from the side straps) and one in my pocket.

So in case I do have to interact for people for a reason, I am ready. Never touch your mask is good advice for medical professionals in a hospital, but if you are just cycling by yourself, in my view, it doesn't matter if you touch it to pull it up. (How is it getting infected?)

That's my personal policy in a place with plenty of space and no problem distancing and people who are polite and careful with distancing. If I were in a more crowded place, I would consider wearing it continuously and I do so even, say, outdoors waiting in line to enter grocery.

Thanks for your helpful & valuable answer
. Here in my Italian region (Piedmont), the authorities are thinking of making the face masks always mandatory for everyone since the first days of May, even for people walking alone in large outdoor places always at a safe distance. 1/20 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
