      Significant paper on the cost of misinformation.       It's a good paper; they took pains to control for many alternative explanations and this really looks like a causal effect of misinformation to deaths. (Stuff your correlation isn't causation one-liners: it's a stupid line and researchers aren't idiots and have taken stats 101).

      Also, please note: information and misinformation changes behavior. Varying degrees but it does. Misinformation on Facebook changes behavior just like misinformation on TV. Too often people deny this because they can hide behind lack of good ways to measure it. Here, we have one.

          anyone know how they controlled for the alt hypothesis that viewers of Tucker Carlson tend to be more cautious, or otherwise better-informed? haha bc I’m sure others commenting here are ahead of me & have read it!

          They say they had a set of tests that controlled for permutations in various demographics but they didn't mention education level specifically in those demos.

          This paper is a massive stretch. Arguing that a single TV anchor can influence behavior is radically outside anything ive ever seen in the entirely of political science. Im not convinced sunset is reasonable instrument to determine direction of causality either

          2. i question whether the author has really sat with folks who watch fox. The TV isnt plugged into their heads. Most barely watch it. they skip channels, leave the room, play with their phones, tune in from the kitchen. this is why ethnography matters when making massive claims

          If (mis)information didn’t affect behaviour, companies wouldn’t invest so much money into producing it. And there wouldn’t be such a contentious battle over politically-motivated media. And yet, here we are.

          Propaganda works. And the tired old argument that we have to ‘prove’ misinformation affects behaviour, to the same people who cry foul of any slight ‘mischaracterisation’ or ‘slander’...

          One of my first instincts was: Who could they measure that!!?? I haven't finished re-reading it critically, only a first dash through. My training is in chemistry ... social issues always seem impossible to measure *to me* at first because of my bias. It is clever ...
