the thing is, highly social public spaces need to be paired with responsible messaging from the top. Since the top (Gov DeSantis, Gaetz, et al) are actively encouraging actions that will end up getting more people sick, there's concern about how that will play out at beaches...

I think it resonated with people because it's so clearly frivolous -- enjoyable, but not necessary. That's hard to understand for a lot of people watching while sheltering in place and only occasionally running crucial errands with a mask.
