Doesn't this type of study also call into question the need to worry about transmission by touching surfaces?

How so?

If surface transmission was a major issue, then you'd see more randomly-located infections because people happened to touch the same door handle to enter the restaurant or bathroom. And the main infections would be the kitchen staff who handle dirty plates & utensils.

I agree that fomite transmission remains a big open question. It's obviously theoretically possible but I haven't seen a lot of evidence that it's widespread. Otoh it's hard to study! Personally, I am no longer doing anything but washing hands after opening a box/touching things.

I mean we will wait for the studies, but I think whether kids transmit a lot (Taiwan, schools open, not much happening) and whether fomites are a key vector (need studies!) are big *open* questions. I'm with the precautionary principle in general but really need studies here.
