I believe the idea is to limit your exposure as much as possible. Anything that puts you within 6 ft of another person isn't a great idea. One choice is a necessity, one isn't.

Read the piece. Cramming people indoors for a year is a huge huge risk itself. It’s better to manage the congestion outdoors.

Couldn’t agree more. Harder to do in major metros like NYC but agree outdoors is necessary for good health, something that’s sadly been lost in our plugged-in, heads-down tech-addicted society.

Sadly, @katrinawoz, you and I are living on different planets right now. People have been dropping dead all around us in NYC and there are plenty of asymptomatic, maskless people walking the streets who crowd and do not care if I might be high-risk.

What’s been happening in NYC is devastating but asymptomatic carriers & coronavirus are here for long-term. Carriers in your grocery store. Carriers in laundry rooms. Outdoor spaces can be managed to limit people & offer stress relief.

How would you manage Prospect Park when it's nice out and everyone goes there? I don't have the luxury of going to the grocery store because I have to minimize my risk. I do have to walk a dog. Even in lockdown, a 6 ft radius of personal space in NYC is a joke.

True, personal space is a challenge in NYC but currently grocery stores (here anyway) limit customers inside stores. A guard lets you in as people leave. That method could apply to outdoor spaces.

If you remember, our grocery aisles aren't spacious enough for a 6ft radius. Anyone who thinks it's possible to limit a beach population has never been to Riis Park in summer. Outdoor frolicking is a lovely idea, but like I said, we're living on different planets right now.

Beaches in LA get very crowded. Hiking trails here can feel like the FDR at 5 PM. New and more sustainable policies are needed as we learn to live with coronavirus. A vaccine isn't going to save society.

No, but I feel you have to do what you can to minimize the spread until there is one. I feel it's my responsibility to keep a distance from others. Most people here feel that way because most of us have lost someone, or almost did.

Without fresh air and sun, peoples immunity and mental health will plummet and it’s a huge risk factor on it’s own. As with everything else it’s a bigger challenge in New York because of space. They should limit the number per park, require masks, have visual guidelines etc.

What people are missing is that six foot indoors and six foot outdoors are very different things (UV+ventilation) as are sustained contact and someone walking by. This will be perhaps a year—we cannot keep people indoors for that long. It would significantly worsen the toll.

Look, I’m not arguing the need for outdoor air AT ALL. I never was. What I’m saying is there is no way to control the volume of people entering public spaces, especially here in NYC, where we’ve lost over 11k people.

There’s no way to do that, that’s what I’ve been saying. I’ve been going out on my fire escape, but I’m lucky I have one.

Of course there are many ways to do that. There are many many many ways to do just that. Congestion management is done is so many other contexts. Anyway, I'll just leave it here.
