There are two purposes of masks: protect the wearer from infection AND/OR protect others from wearer's potential transmission. For medical workers, both are important. For regular people in most settings, it's about the latter. Cotton mask will do that; an N95 with valve WON'T.

What about wearing a surgical mask OVER an n95 with a valve? I don’t want my vulnerable parents going out with anything less than an n95.

Thankyou. I'm >65 and the only support of my entire family including my wife who is disabled from MS and immuno-suppressed. When going out I wear an N95 but have been becoming nervous about Mask Nazis lately.

We need some good comebacks prepared so that we’re ready for it.

Yeah that’s similar to my reason for already having n95s. Part of me wants a snappier comeback but can’t think of one ;)

Individuals shouldn’t be ashamed to have a few N95s for personal use. It’s not your responsibility to supply your local hospital, it’s the health system’s job. If the health systems can’t supply them adequately, then the workers should receive hazard pay.

I agree, and keep telling people that though it is still better for the valved N95 people to cover the valve. Can even tape a small cloth covering over it. The sooner we get this under control, the better it is especially for people like her parents.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1246502440691777538 …

zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepGreat post on why we must all wear masks—to normalize them for everyone else. Yes! But please, if you see someone wearing an N95 or a surgical mask, don’t shame them. You don’t know people’s health status. Some people are sanitizing and reusing. Some have one leftover mask. https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1246459633515913216 …Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
Why would you want to cover the valve? You do know it’s a one-way valve, open during exhalation only.

To make sure you're not transmitting outwards especially while asymptomatic. I've seen a whole range of valve designs, and some would block nothing and there is still a bunch of questions on droplet size etc. Nature paper: most infectious two days prior plus day of of symptoms.
