Example of how the purpose of masks for ordinary people is still not understood. The ones with exhalation valves, including N95s, should not be worn around people, period. Not just in sterile hospital operating rooms as NYT claims. Cotton mask>valved N95.https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/health/coronavirus-best-face-masks.html …

Yes, that's true. I should have been more careful. But given that the article is pitched to a general audience and N95s are in such short supply, that could be made clear while leading with info on cloth face coverings.
-
Authentic KN95s are now available inexpensively, in quantity. Any institution still without them or other effective equivalents has internal logistical problems.

Yup, *millions* of us lived through fire & smoke emergencies these past few years. The last N95s left in emergency kits aren't suitable for donation and be needed now (
) and during this year's "fire season" in the West Coast. -
Yes, I live in the North Bay of SF and have a couple in my Go Bag too. My issue with the NYT article is that it could be more clear, in describing each type of mask, who it’s recommended for, since that’s the point of the article. Also:

Tons of people in NorCal and the Northwest have them from the past five years of fires. They’ve been donating them to hospitals.

Will hospitals take an N95, or two, if some random person walks in and offers them?
