Masks at all times. Not masks when you’re sick as the WHO still insists. Masks at all times whenever around people, especially indoors—grocery stores, public transportation, any workplace still operating.https://twitter.com/AbraarKaran/status/1250581587084955648 …

I'm a co-author (one among many) on this new paper reviewing and synthesizing the strong scientific evidence for how universal masking can reduce transmission (source control) and greatly dampen the spread of COVID-19. It's under review. Preprint here: https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202004.0203/v1 … pic.twitter.com/Q6CFBfUNgc

Hong Kong. One of the most dense cities on the planet. A government that dragged its foot. Border with China that never closed. But the people all masked up early January. Four COVID deaths total! Four in all these months. NYC is past 10,000 known deaths.😢https://twitter.com/hongkonghermit/status/1247027948525203456 …

I'm borrowing this gorgeous photo by Sweary Dave. I live here, over to the left of the pic. Most densely populated part of the planet. We made it through 65+ days with only 4 deaths thanks to the community response. Moral: Wear masks, don't wait for your govt. to save you. pic.twitter.com/d4IRlChgIZ

They did more, but they have only four deaths in four months. Their own health authorities credit mask-wearing as a top reason.

Important to stress that many people are still working, still commuting to work on packed buses and subway. The schools were shut early (something that wouldn't cost the govt. much money) and civil servants worked from home, but life continued semi-normal for the most part.

Japan also has masks but just declared a state of emergency and are warning of 400,000 deaths. Are the Japanese more susceptible or is there more to this than just masks?

Japanese is doing everything else wrong: no testing, no isolation, nothing. NOTHING BUT MASKS. Does it look like Lombardy or NYC? Because it is otherwise in denial, of course get much worse hit than Taiwan or Hong Kong but it is the best, obvious control case for mask efficacy.

In fact, nobody has ever claimed masks alone are magic, but Japan's case shows masks are very very strong in their effects. Japan has screwed this up worse than Italy or NYC. Things have been open, full-on, until now. They'll get hit, but amazing how slow it's been for them.

If Japan is doing nothing but masks, then that pretty much proves that masks are not the main answer. They have to be a part of a comprehensive response. Social distancing and testing are much more important

If you are unable to understand how control cases work, sure. A country that is doing nothing but masks, versus Italy and NYC that have hospitals that are overrun. Of course masks+isolation is better but Taiwan is fully-functioning, schools open. They trace+masks. No isolation.

This is one of the _only_ things we could do, collectively, to make the future as safe as possible, but without leadership to do it is there any chance of the cultural shift that would be required in major Western nations? Ugh.

Work it from the ground up if you have to. You just need to convince two people, and get them to convince two people. Make masks, wear masks, normalise masks. Get exponential growth to work against the virus.
