Masks at all times. Not masks when you’re sick as the WHO still insists. Masks at all times whenever around people, especially indoors—grocery stores, public transportation, any workplace still operating.https://twitter.com/AbraarKaran/status/1250581587084955648 …

I'm a co-author (one among many) on this new paper reviewing and synthesizing the strong scientific evidence for how universal masking can reduce transmission (source control) and greatly dampen the spread of COVID-19. Hong Kong. One of the most dense cities on the planet. A government that dragged its foot. Border with China that never closed. But the people all masked up early January. Four COVID deaths total! Four in all these months. NYC is past 10,000 known deaths.😢https://twitter.com/hongkonghermit/status/1247027948525203456 …

I'm borrowing this gorgeous photo by Sweary Dave. I live here, over to the left of the pic. Most densely populated part of the planet. We made it through 65+ days with only 4 deaths thanks to the community response. Moral: Wear masks, don't wait for your govt. to save you. pic.twitter.com/d4IRlChgIZ

Hong Kong is denser than NYC, relies on crowded mass transit, is not fully shut down, and had much more travel from Wuhan early on—and has had four known COVID deaths TOTAL in all these months. Four total. Don't let anyone say NYC tragedy was inevitable.https://twitter.com/RossBarkan/status/1251280238614654978 …

Today, Slate is up with an excellent piece that distills why 11,000+ deaths in New York City was NOT inevitable. It's a lie that density alone explains the suffering. Denser places around the world are fine. And sparsely populated areas are struggling. https://slate.com/business/2020/04/coronavirus-new-york-city-outbreak-blame.html …

Hong Kong uses practically nothing but crowded subways (and crowded ferries and buses) for transportation. They acted early and especially universally masked up early. Four total deaths so far.https://twitter.com/johnnymagoo2/status/1251577796951932933 …

The Swedish Publuc Health Agency spent most of February debunking the NEJM letter and turning a deaf ear to everything else suggesting presymptonatic transmission. They still refuse to believe this. The strategy is based on the idea that only symptomatic people can transmit.

Masks with respirator emit unfiltered air out on the people next to the person wearing them. They should be outlawed.

That’s right. The other aspect to this that they mention is *household transmission*- pay close attention to this; if the epidemic is being driven by the 2-3 days that your family member is asymptomatic, at home, in close contact, w/ no mask, then we are missing something big.

Yeah. Gonna need mass testing/tracing with central quarantine. All those empty hotels! I don't see how we can halt household transmission if almost half the cases are at peak infection right before symptoms start.😢 So gotta stop the transmission in the community: distance+masks.

The problem is not enough masks. Surgical masks only last 2 hours, and that means we need billions of masks each day. We need working, simple, washable thus cleanable masks. Do you have any recipe for that?

For your average person, you can make something out of a t-shirt, a safety pin, and paper towels. Check out the Masks4All hashtag and you'll see some of the tutorials and other resources that people have put out. http://masks4all.co/
